In addition to individualized therapeutic intervention, it’s important to bolster treatment with greater understanding of compulsive behavior. Reaching out for support (in-person or online) between sessions has been proven to
improve treatment outcomes and resilience at such time treatment concludes.
Compulsive behaviors (or addictions) act on our brain in a very similar manner as compared to illegal narcotics. Brain imaging demonstrates our brains light up in similar patterns as we consume pornography, place our next bet,
sit down to play our favorite videogame, or purchase our next new, shiny object. Without treatment, our daily lives are negatively impacted across a spectrum of areas ultimately leaving us feeling isolated, scared, trapped,
depressed, and anxious. Below are a variety of resources to supplement our work together.

Compulsive Pornography Use
Compulsive pornography use is increasing for all age groups with kids being exposed to porn at much younger ages as compared to 30 years ago. Compulsive consumption of porn negatively impacts daily life, relationships, and financial well-being.

Compulsive Gambling
Compulsive gambling has increased significantly with states approving both in-person as well as online gambling. Gambling apps on smart phones further increases the problem placing strain on relationships and can lead to financial ruin for some.

Compulsive Social Media Use
Compulsive social media consumption robs people of living their life in the moment. Terms like “doom scrolling” and “FOMO” often accompany compulsive social media use.

Compulsive Videogaming
Compulsive videogaming is becoming more prevalent as games continue to evolve. Kids, teens, and adults alike struggle with putting down the controller or pushing back away from the keyboard.

Compulsive Sexual Behavior
Compulsive sexual behavior, sometimes referred to as hypersexuality is an intense focus on sexual fantasies, urges or behaviors that typically lead to challenges around health, relationships, employment, and finances.

Compulsive Shopping
Compulsive shopping is typically experienced by people who feel intense urges to shop whether in-person or online. Purchases may be made without thought and can occur in quick succession (i.e., shopping sprees); if left untreated, can lead to difficulties with relationships, credit problems, and financial ruin.
